Tough Tools

Plunger lift has been a favorite application for artificial lift, especially in high-gas/liquid ratio (GLR) wells. The introduction of gas-assisted plunger lift wells (GAPL) and plunger-assisted gas lift wells (PAGL) for cost-effectively extending the life cycle of the well and minimizing the gas injection requirements has plunger lift experiencing increased popularity as a lift option.

Plunger lift employs a plunger that travels up and down the length of the tubing to minimize liquid fallback to optimize production. To prevent potential damage to the downhole components and the plunger itself, a bumper spring is placed at the bottom of the wellbore to absorb impact. Failure of the bumper spring can result in downtime and expense to pull the well and repair.

The market changed with the advent of horizontal wells. The high liquid rate wells and high gas rate wells required a new approach to optimizing production. Bypass plungers became the leading choice for these types of wells that required high plunger cycle counts versus conventional plunger lift. These higher cycle count wells required a tougher bumper spring solution to extend the life of the downhole equipment.

The multi-patented Flowco bumper spring assembly is designed to achieve optimal cushion and recoil for maximizing the lifespan of the complete bumper spring assembly. Our spring features a one-piece head mandrel design and fastening method for increased reliability. Also, with the unique auto-release feature, the operator can control liquid volume in the tubing for each plunger cycle. Available in multiple sizes and features, these “tough tools” are the most durable in the market.

The bumper spring is the foundation of the plunger lift system.

Operators should build their plunger lift systems with the most durable, patented selection of springs available. Contact us at info@flowcosolutions.com to discuss your challenges with our experienced technical team.
